Fashion designer Joe Malaika is once again proving that his influence extends far beyond the runway. In a powerful gesture of compassion, Malaika has donated another set of prosthetic legs to a Ugandan amputee, continuing a mission that has become a defining part of his work.
The latest recipient, Paul Wasswa, a member of the Amputee Self Awareness Uganda (ASNU) community, has lived with a below-knee amputation since birth. Thanks to this donation, Wasswa now has the opportunity to experience greater mobility and independence. The prosthetic legs were donated to Malaika by Stephanie Ann, an amputee from Massachusetts, where the designer is based, and delivered to Uganda as part of his outreach.
This marks the second prosthetic donation Malaika has facilitated in Uganda this year. In March, he gifted a prosthetic leg to Joshua, a cancer survivor who lost his leg during treatment. Each of these gestures reflects Malaika’s commitment to inclusivity and his determination to uplift individuals living with limb differences.
While Joe Malaika is celebrated internationally for his award-winning fashion, he has carved out an equally meaningful legacy as a humanitarian. His annual events empower and create visibility for people with limb differences, while his philanthropic work continues to change lives—often in his home country, even though his fashion collections are yet to be formally showcased there.
With each donation, Malaika is not just transforming mobility but also amplifying the stories of resilience within Uganda’s amputee community. His work serves as a reminder that fashion, at its best, is about more than aesthetics—it can also be a vehicle for empowerment, dignity, and hope.
Joe Malaika is changing lives again.
