Bebe Cool has really suffered at the hands of Ugandans. The man drops albums, does tours, releases singles, but somehow the drama is never about the music. It is always about something else. The irony; every marketing textbook says create conversation around the product. But with Bebe, the conversation is always bigger than the product. Maybe, just maybe, this is a long-term investment strategy, because right now the only thing we remember is the drama, not the track list.
So this time, our dear Rasta was on a London tour. As usual, Break the Chains ekutte wansi ne wagulu. He lands on DJ AG’s online live show, which to be fair, has hosted some solid names. Now, the show has this one cool segment: the guest gets to recommend who should appear next. Naturally, everyone who came before picked peers in their lane friends, collaborators, people within reach. Simple. But Big Size being Big Size, he decided to oversize. Forget the memo, he aimed straight for the stars and not just any star. The man requested for Jay-Z.
Yes, that Jay-Z. Ugandans immediately went into cardiac arrest. X was on fire, WhatsApp groups exploded with people screaming, “Jay-Z??! Oba this man thinks Brooklyn is just after Kamwokya roundabout? If delusions of grandeur ever needed a human mascot, Bebe Cool just applied for the job. Of course, Bebe explained himself as always. He said his reasoning was pure: he was thinking of DJ AG’s best interest. According to him, AG has been struggling to grow his show, so why not shoot for the very best? Noble, right?
He even begged us to understand him. But honestly, we would have understood him better if he had just admitted he is a fan of Jay-Z and left it at that. Nobody’s saying he had to pick a Ugandan artiste, but Jay-Z? Brooooo, that is like us trying to date outside our tax bracket – one of Uganda’s biggest problem to date.
