Singer-turned-politician Hon. Geoffrey Lutaaya has spoken out after his 17-year-old daughter, Mellan Nambatya Lutaaya, accused him of neglect and failure to pay her school fees in a TikTok video that has since sparked public debate.
Mellan, a Senior Four candidate, alleged that her father had abandoned his parental responsibilities despite attempts to reach him through calls, court, and third parties.
In a phone interview, Lutaaya acknowledged that Mellan is indeed his biological daughter but dismissed her public accusations as being influenced by “malicious individuals.”
He insisted that he has been supporting her education, explaining that he enrolled her at Stella Marris, Nsuube, a school he believed offered the right environment for her. However, Mellan’s mother reportedly objected to the choice and transferred her to another institution, where she was later expelled after allegedly assaulting a teacher.
“The mother never called me to inform me about the expulsion. I only got to know through another parent. Later, when she joined a new school, they asked for 1.96 million shillings. I paid the money, but they kept demanding more,” Lutaaya said.
The legislator further expressed frustration at being denied the chance to bond with his daughter, saying he wants to take full responsibility for her care.
“She doesn’t deserve to be used like that. She is old enough, and I can take her with me. I want to introduce her to her clan. I have raised other people’s children; my own cannot fail me,” he pleaded.
Mellan, however, insists that her father has failed to meet his obligations — a stance that has drawn sympathy from sections of the public while also sparking debate on the growing trend of private family disputes spilling onto social media platforms.
