Celebrated Emcee Edwin Katamba, alias Mc Kats, has found himself in a tricky situation after his name appeared in a legal battle for copyright infringement. Swangz Avenue has sent a notice of intention to sue Mc Kats and Dubai-based promoter Zack Maya of Vibes Promotions for allegedly using the Roast and Rhyme brand without permission.
The dispute arose after Vibes Promotions used the Roast and Rhyme logo, theme, and other materials for its November edition of the Winter Festival in Dubai. Mc Kats, along with Top Boy Mc and Morgan MC, is scheduled to perform at the event.
Swangz Avenue demands that Vibes Promotions pays Shs 1 billion in damages and Shs 90 million in legal fees. The company also wants Vibes Promotions to cease using the “Roast and Rhyme” name, logo, slogan, or any similar material in connection with any event or promotion.
Mc Kats quickly distanced himself from the organizing team, claiming he was only booked as a performer. “Am Booked for The UAE convention DXB Winter Festival Both events have been ongoing for 6-9 Years DXB Roast and rhyme feel like show I Am not the organizer nor promoter I don’t give the names am just booked To whoever is sending me lawsuits,” he posted.
In response, Swangz Avenue boss Julius Kyazze advised Mc Kats to seek proper legal guidance. “You may want to seek proper legal guidance on this matter. The issue involves secondary infringement, and the primary party may have to clarify it with UAE immigration authorities soon. This will be addressed through the proper channels. Ignorance of the law is not innocence. IP theft should not be tolerated. No need for further discussion here,” Kyazze posted.
