There seems to be trouble brewing in Uganda’s music circles again, and this time, it’s former Firebase Crew member Buchaman pointing fingers at Eddy Kenzo for what he calls a painful betrayal.
Buchaman has accused singer Eddy Kenzo of betrayal, saying the Big Talent boss has not shown him loyalty despite being one of the people who helped him at the start of his career.
Speaking in an interview, Buchaman revealed that he discovered Eddy Kenzo years ago at Monalisa in Kabusu, where a young and ambitious Kenzo approached him asking for a chance to join Firebase Crew. The Lwaki Temumatila singer says he took the budding artist under his wing and introduced him to the Firebase family — but now feels the BET Award winner has completely abandoned him.
“I found Kenzo at Monalisa in Kabusu. He knelt down and told me he was a singer who needed a chance at Firebase. I saw that he sang well, so I took him to Kamwokya and linked him up with Mikie Wine. That’s how they came up with Yanimba,” Buchaman lamented.
According to Buchaman , despite their history, Kenzo has failed to look out for him in recent years, especially after promising him a role in the Uganda National Musicians Federation.
“I feel betrayed,” he said bitterly. “Kenzo told me to come to the Federation and be part of mobilization. I even organized musician associations in Acholi, but I have never received any relief from the Federation’s SACCO.”
The singer, whose real name is Mark Bugembe, was once Bobi Wine’s right-hand man in Firebase before quitting the camp in 2011.
Now a supporter of the ruling NRM, Buchaman says he expected more solidarity from Kenzo, who he helped years before fame and fortune found him.
“I gave him a hand when he was still struggling. I didn’t expect him to forget that,” he added.
Background: A long history of brotherhood and fallout
The Firebase Crew, founded by Bobi Wine in the early 2000s, was once a powerhouse of talent and activism in Uganda’s entertainment scene. It nurtured several stars including Buchaman and Mikie Wine, who became household names under its banner.
However, as the years passed, friendships fractured and ambitions shifted. While Bobi Wine moved into politics, Kenzo rose to international fame with Sitya Loss, and Buchaman later aligned with the ruling NRM government.
The recent accusations add another twist to the ongoing narrative of how Uganda’s music brotherhood continues to be tested by fame, politics, and survival in a changing industry.
