Kampala woke up to color, laughter, and rhythm on Tuesday morning as a lively procession of boda bodas rolled through the city, painting the streets with energy and pride. Riders wrapped in flags, waving and cheering, set off a spectacle that quickly turned into a citywide celebration of all things Ugandan — our people, our culture, and the spirit that binds us together.
This was no ordinary day. It was a nationwide toast to 60 years of shared stories and national pride, marking a milestone for Uganda Waragi, the country’s most iconic homegrown spirit that has accompanied celebrations from weddings to street parties for generations.
To mark the anniversary, Uganda Waragi partnered with the boda boda community in collaboration with SafeBoda for a symbolic street celebration. For decades, boda riders have embodied Uganda’s unstoppable hustle and creativity, weaving through traffic to keep the country in motion.
“We chose to celebrate with the boda boda community because they are integral to our way of life, a true reflection of Uganda’s spirit of creativity and hustle. They connect us, they move us, and they represent what binds us together as Ugandans,” said Hilda Aguti, Marketing Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited.
The celebration spread across the city, reaching everyday heroes who keep Kampala alive. In Wandegeya, salon women received surprise packages as they braided hair and shared laughter. Street-food legends like Sula Birungo, known for his famous Kikalaayi chicken, and Jib, the rolex maestro, were honored for keeping Kampala’s flavors alive.
At Nakawa Market, food vendors paused mid-service to celebrate over steaming plates of meere yoona — the taste of home that fuels Uganda’s daily grind. Taxi drivers, riders, and entertainers joined in too, with familiar faces like VJ Jingo adding excitement to the moment.
By afternoon, the city’s laughter gathered into a feast. Tables overflowed with matooke, yams, kinyebwa, and beef in groundnut paste. The aroma, the chatter, and the sense of community turned the meal into something larger than food — a reflection of who Ugandans are at heart.
“For 60 years, Uganda Waragi has shared in our laughter and stories. This anniversary is a thank-you to every Ugandan who has made our spirit their own,” said Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager.
As music floated through the evening air and strangers became friends, one thing was clear: this was more than a brand celebration. It was a reminder of the warmth, resilience, and creativity that make Uganda truly unforgettable. endless spirit.
