Ugandan music fans are in a frenzy after Sheebah Karungi released her latest single Nweera, which she described as a “Letter To Self” — a deeply personal track inspired by major life changes, including getting “pregnant and married.”
But the celebration quickly turned into controversy. Just hours after the release, social media users began drawing parallels between Sheebah’s Nweera and an older song by Grenade Official bearing the same title — with strikingly similar lyrics and melody.
Grenade’s version, which surfaced about two years ago, had even sparked a TikTok challenge at the time, leading fans to question whether Sheebah’s new single might have borrowed more than just the name.
The revelation has reignited long-standing conversations about originality in Uganda’s music industry. Earlier this year, Sheebah was entangled in a dispute with fellow singer Ava Peace over song ownership and now, fans are wondering if history is repeating itself.
Interestingly, Grenade Official has remained silent on the matter. Sources close to the artist say he is currently out of the country, and efforts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.
Despite the brewing controversy, Nweera is performing impressively. Within a day of its release, the song had garnered more than 74,000 YouTube views and over 1,400 comments with listeners split between praising its emotional depth and questioning its authenticity.
For now, Queen Karma appears unbothered, but the storm around Nweera is only beginning to gather force and the internet isn’t letting this one slide anytime soon.
