As the school year winds down, several nursery schools across the country are preparing for end of year graduation ceremonies. But singer Iryn Namubiru has criticised what she calls the growing commercialisation of these events, accusing some schools of turning a simple celebration into an expensive venture for parents.
Namubiru, known for hits such as Nkuweki, expressed concern over institutions that charge what she described as “exorbitant and unnecessary” fees for graduation packages. She noted that some parents, who already struggle to pay one hundred thousand shillings in termly fees, are being asked to contribute an additional two hundred thousand shillings for activities related to the graduation.
She further argued that the added costs covering gowns, suits or dresses, certificates and snacks are often inflated and place an avoidable strain on families. Although she does not personally have children in nursery school, Namubiru said her concerns stem from the experiences of her nieces, whose parents have been affected by these demands.
The singer called on schools to be more transparent and considerate when setting fees for such activities, saying many families are already stretched and cannot keep up with the rising costs.
