Joshua Baraka’s Wrong Places is currently a frontrunner for Song of the Year, earning millions of views and international recognition. The track has become a major export for Uganda, with 1.4 million views on YouTube in just five months. It has also opened doors for Joshua, including performances in the UK and other locations.
Despite the song’s success, rising artist Kapeke who is known for hits like Kaba, has expressed doubts about its local relevance. Kapeke, whose real name is Nsubuga Derrick, believes Wrong Places has not resonated with audiences in Uganda’s suburbs.
Speaking in a recent interview, Kapeke pointed out, “Wrong Places is not on ground. If you ask vendors at Kibuye Market, let’s be honest, they don’t know this song.” According to him, while Wrong Places is gaining traction globally, it has yet to capture the attention of Ugandan locals.
Kapeke is quick to back up his own claim to success, highlighting the massive popularity of his own song Kaba. “My song is on the ground,” he asserted, noting that Kaba has garnered 2.5 million views in six months more than Wrong Places and has found a strong following among local audiences.
Kapeke, a rising star in the Ugandan music scene, has made a name for himself with tracks such as Tema Ensingo (which many refer to as Kaba), Polokoto, Simanyi, and Shuu, his collaboration with Fik Fameica. His music, known for its catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, is especially popular in Uganda’s urban and suburban areas.
