Artiste manager and singer Geoffrey Kyagambidwa, popularly known as Chagga, has expressed deep frustration and disappointment following the abrupt cancellation of his much anticipated “Friends of Chagga” concert that had been scheduled for earlier this month at Kati Kati Grounds in Lugogo.
The event, meant to celebrate his long service to Uganda’s music industry, was cancelled after the promoter reportedly failed to pay key service providers, triggering a chain reaction of logistical failures that made it impossible for the show to proceed.
Chagga says the bigger blow came from what he describes as a painful lack of support from fellow musicians, unfulfilled pledges and what he believes could be sabotage from within the industry. He says the experience has left him feeling betrayed by people he considered friends.
Speaking about the matter, Chagga sounded emotionally drained, resigned but still visibly hurt by how everything unfolded.
“I don’t condemn them for anything; they are just musicians,” he said. “But not a single table was sold.”
According to him, the only person who offered any financial support was a one Meddie, who gave him Shs 1 million and promised to add more on the concert day.
Things deteriorated further when the event organizers suddenly pulled out, leaving him stranded. Fellow musician Sizza Man later offered to assist in reorganizing the show, but by then the situation was already beyond rescue.
Chagga revealed that several individuals had earlier pledged tables worth Shs 10 million, yet not a single pledge materialized. With no finances, no sold tables and no organizational support, he was forced to call off the event entirely.
After the cancellation, social media reports surfaced suggesting that Chagga had received money from Eddy Kenzo and the Uganda National Musicians Federation. These rumors attracted criticism online. Chagga has now come out firmly to dismiss the allegations.
He clarified that Kenzo never gave him any money but had only pledged his presence at the show.
“I have never received any amount of money from Kenzo as funding for my concert. His support was physical appearance at the show, not money. He promised to support me and indeed travelled from upcountry to be at the event even when it did not take place,” Chagga said.
