Singer Gloria Buggie has responded to remarks made by veteran Kadongo Kamu artiste Kazibwe Kapo, who recently accused the new generation of musicians of producing “useless music” and contributing to the decline of Uganda’s music industry.
During an interview with Zubeda, Gloria Buggie was asked if she knew Kazibwe Kapo — a question that immediately sparked debate after she admitted she didn’t recognize him. When Zubeda insisted that Kapo is a “big artiste,” Buggie defended herself, saying it is impossible for every musician to know everyone in the industry.
“I don’t know every artiste, just like every artiste doesn’t know me,” she said.
Her comments come in the middle of a brewing generational clash, triggered by Kapo’s criticism of modern artistes. According to him, today’s musicians release short-lived music that lacks depth or cultural influence.
Kazibwe Kapo argued that in the past, artistes invested serious time in songwriting — sometimes spending two months crafting a single track. He said musicians would write pages and pages to produce songs that lasted 10 to 15 minutes, with rich storytelling and strong messages.
By contrast, he claimed, the new generation simply records “according to the vibe” of the moment, leading to what he calls a decline in the quality and longevity of Ugandan music.
But Gloria Buggie strongly disagrees.
“What they were doing is good, but let us accept that times change and things keep evolving,” she responded. “If I was born yesterday, I will go with what I find. Let’s not stay in the past, but also let’s not erase it.”
She added that different genres require different styles and expectations.
“If I sing Afrobeat or RnB, it doesn’t make sense for me to sing a five-minute song. Kadongo Kamu is storytelling — that’s why those songs are long.”
While she admitted that today’s music can be more vulgar than previous eras, Buggie said the shift reflects changing audience preferences, not a collapse of the industry.
“I don’t think we killed the industry. Some things have just changed, and some people don’t want to accept that. What’s there is what fans like,” she said.
