Whoever claimed girls cannot throw a luxury party has clearly never survived a Girls in the City takeover. The latest edition, hosted yesterday at Mezo Noir in partnership with Don Julio, delivered a full-throttle, high–glam rave that placed Kampala’s most dazzling boss babes at the centre of their own universe. It was a reservation-only affair, the kind of strictly curated event where securing a spot became a status symbol, and where big spenders, style queens and deck divas came dressed to dominate the night.
The transformation at Mezo Noir was immediate from the entrance. A pristine white carpet welcomed guests into an immersive theme that stretched across every corner of the venue, reaffirming why the club has become East Africa’s most sought-after party destination. The fashion was nothing short of a spectacle. Sequined gowns shimmered under the lights, neon statements lit up the room, and sleek black classics added a timeless touch. The hosts added a playful twist, asking guests to sign on a camera lens upon arrival, a symbolic stamp of ownership over the night’s narrative.
The music lived up to the hype. City Girl UG opened with a nostalgic Hip Hop, R and B and Dancehall set that instantly lifted the mood. When Sheila Gashumba, popularly known as DJ Lil Stunner, hit the decks, the rave shifted gears into a full Amapiano sunrise. She powered through favourites by Jazzworx, GL Ceejay and KaphoMphela, turning the dance floor into a pulsing sea of movement.
Don Julio made its presence felt with a display of refined indulgence. Bespoke tequila cocktails impressed, but it was the dramatic bottle service that stole the show. Waitresses marched through the room with illuminated bottle carriers bearing the brand’s signature iconography, including the celebrated 1942 bottle, all choreographed to the iconic Dorime soundtrack. It was theatre, spectacle and luxury rolled into one.
Judie Nandekya, the Senior Brand Manager for Tequila and Rum East Africa at UBL, said the event was about celebrating bold women disrupting a male-dominated nightlife scene. She said Don Julio partnered with Mezo Noir to honour the ambition of female DJs and give a new sparkle to a concept the city already loved.
As dawn edged closer, guest DJ Cocainna, known as Big Coca, seized the decks and blew the room open. The crowd surged toward her with phones raised as she teased the audience with slow Jazz-tinted Amapiano before dropping a heavy, unexpected shift that sent the venue into a frenzy. Her transitions were razor sharp, weaving through Afro-fusion and garage while she danced behind the booth with controlled abandon. At one moment she climbed onto the booth, hair flying, commanding the crowd to “hold it, shimmy and move,” and Mezo Noir obeyed as one. By the end of her set, the room was sweaty, breathless and convinced they had just witnessed one of the most electric performances of the year.
The Girls in the City takeover proved once again that when girls decide to have fun, they do it the Don Julio way: bold, luxurious and absolutely unforgettable.
