You see, when Ugandans talk about removing a dictator, it can mean many things. Sometimes it is political, sometimes it is sports, like how we, basketball fans, were shouting not long ago. Unfortunately, when you mention ‘dictator’ in Uganda, there is like one name synonymous with it but we are not on that jazz. We are here about Ethan Kavuma shaking a table with very expensive drinks on it, the pressure could cause regime change.
While appearing on the It’s Not that Serious podcast recently, the media personality went bare-knuckles, elbows, and even shins, calling out radio veterans who have stayed on air long enough to qualify for pension. After a decade of radio fame, Ethan announced he was stepping away not because he failed, but because he evolved. According to him, radio had become a predictable routine, like certain politicians’ speeches.
He did not mention names, but you could feel several radio dinosaurs clutching their headphones in fear. “I am sorry to say,” Ethan declared with the confidence of a man holding a glass worth someone’s rent, “but how are you pushing 50 and still on radio?” The man did not blink. He went on to say the media landscape is suffocating because the same faces, sorry, same voices have refused to retire. It’s the same people on radio. The same people on TV. The same people on posters. The same people everywhere. At this point, even potholes change shape more often than some presenters change jobs.
He believes the veterans should honestly step aside, train the young ones, and stop guarding positions like they are national treasures. And honestly, he is not entirely wrong. The industry is held hostage by people who started radio when Nokia 3310 was breaking spines. And of course, reactions flew. Some people said, webale nnyo, but you do not abandon a career after 15 years. Like wine, we get better with age.
