Just as promised, multi-award-winning American R&B icon Joe Thomas delivered an unforgettable night of soul, nostalgia, and world-class artistry during the A Night with Joe Thomas concert held on Sunday, November 30th at Mestil Gardens, Kampala.
Organised by Malembe Lifestyle and powered by I&M Bank, the event was sold out well in advance, drawing a spirited blend of old-school R&B enthusiasts, Kampala socialites, and music lovers eager for a premium live experience.
Before the main spectacle, revelers warmed up at Music and Friends, a daytime precursor set up in a separate section of Mestil. Running from afternoon into early evening, the hangout featured curated sets from Rwandan DJs, delicious food, refreshing cocktails, and a relaxed social ambience that perfectly set the tone for the night.
As the sun set, energy shifted to the main concert grounds where DJ Handsome primed the crowd with a nostalgic mix of classic R&B anthems. By the time Joe was ready to step on stage, fans were already singing along, swaying, and visibly eager for the headline act.
At around 10 p.m, Joe, dressed sharply in shimmering silver tones, made his entrance to thunderous cheers. From the first note, he transported the audience straight into the golden era of R&B. His rich, velvety vocals and effortless stage presence created an intimate, emotionally charged atmosphere that reminded Kampala why he remains one of the genre’s most enduring voices.
Having previously performed in Uganda twice, Joe returned with renewed vigor, supported by a seasoned live band that allowed him to glide through a smooth, uninterrupted set. He journeyed through his most beloved hits, opening with the playful “Don’t Wanna Be a Player” and the sensual “More and More.” He followed with deeply heartfelt renditions of fan favourites including “If I Was Your Man,” “Thank God I Found You,” “I’m Missing You,” “I Want to Know,” and “I Believe in You.”
Joe also paid homage to contemporary R&B stars, revisited defining records from the early stages of his career, and sprinkled in teasing fragments of his collaborations with hip-hop artistes, moments that sent waves of nostalgia rippling through the crowd.
Joe didn’t just perform, he reconnected Kampala with the timeless magic of classic R&B.
