For years, Ugandan musicians have found themselves on the wrong side of the law for sampling or remaking songs without proper clearance, a mistake that can lead to court battles, hefty fines, or even jail time. But earlier today, singer Viboyo showed the industry how it should be done.
Instead of risking copyright infringement, the veteran artist met legendary musician Frank Mbalire in person to secure full authorization to remake his timeless classic Siri Kusuula in any style he chooses.
“Today I met up with the legendary Frank Mbalire and he put ink to paper, which means we now have official permission for Siri Kusuula / Ndi Kwambala Ng’ Ekoooti,” Viboyo announced on his social media platforms.
He used the milestone to call on fellow musicians to respect intellectual property and follow the rightful procedures when revamping older hits.
“As artists, it’s important to seek intellectual property permissions from original composers and pay homage too,” he emphasized.
Viboyo also praised Mbalire, describing him as “an encyclopedia of music wisdom and a great fatherly human being.”
With this move, the musician reinforces a message many have ignored for years: great music can be reborn honourably, without disrespecting its creators.
