Veteran singer Mesach Ssemakula has issued a firm message to his children, making it clear that none of his property is automatically theirs to inherit.
Speaking candidly during the Senkoole Family gathering held to celebrate the graduation of Remmy Mubiru, daughter to fellow musician Haruna Mubiru, from the Islamic University in Uganda, the Sigwe Ansimila singer addressed what he described as a growing culture of entitlement among children.
Ssemakula said he has observed an increasing trend where children feel entitled to their parents’ property even when those parents are still alive, something he strongly condemned.
“That will never happen in my bloodline,” he declared.
He urged young people to prioritise education, discipline and hard work, stressing that wealth must be earned rather than expected. According to Ssemakula, every coin he owns was acquired through years of personal sacrifice and effort, and his children must follow the same path.
He emphasised that he does not owe his children material possessions such as land, cars or houses and warned them against waiting for inheritance instead of building their own lives.
“If I decide to sell my land today and buy myself a Benz, that is my right,” he said. “No one should question it.”
The singer also recounted cases where children have reportedly turned against their parents for selling family property, insisting that such behaviour would not be tolerated in his family.
“All my property belongs to my wife and me,” Ssemakula stated. “If you choose not to go to school, that is your decision, but do not expect anything from me.”
