Eddy Kenzo has clarified remarks he made during the vigil of Fik Fameica’s late mother, comments that have sparked wide debate within the creative industry and among the public.
While addressing mourners at the vigil, the Uganda National Musicians Federation interim president proposed the establishment of a cemetery dedicated exclusively to creatives. He said the idea was intended to honour fallen artists while preserving their legacies for future generations.
The proposal, however, quickly attracted criticism. Some observers questioned Kenzo’s priorities, arguing that the creative industry is currently facing more urgent challenges, and accused him of focusing on what they described as misplaced or premature ideas.
Earlier today, Kenzo responded to the backlash, insisting that the proposal has been misunderstood and deserves deeper reflection.
“The cemetery issue should be looked at more deeply,” Kenzo said. “Artists are public figures, and their status attracts many things, including tourism. Imagine legends like Herman Basudde, Paul Kafeero and Mowzey Radio all resting in one place.”
According to Kenzo, such a site would evolve into a cultural landmark, drawing fans, researchers and tourists interested in Uganda’s creative history. He explained that visitors would pay to access the grounds, tour a museum and learn about the lives and contributions of the artists laid to rest there, with some even travelling from abroad for the experience.
Kenzo dismissed claims that the idea was politically motivated, arguing that critics were failing to see its long-term cultural and economic value.
“To think everything is about politics is to miss the bigger picture,” he said, noting that the proposal is centered on legacy, value and a broader vision for the future of Uganda’s creative industry.
