Ugandan musician Karole Kasita believes the music industry missed its most important moment, when artists still had the ear of those in power.
Speaking candidly with a local content creator, the Go hitmaker questioned whether the long-promised copyright law to protect musicians and creatives will ever become a reality.
In her view, the delay is not accidental but a sign that the influence musicians once wielded has quietly slipped away.
Kasita argues that there was a period when artists mattered beyond entertainment. When their voices carried weight in political and policy conversations. That era, she says, is now firmly in the past.
“There was a time when government listened to us and took us seriously,” she said. “That time passed. Now we are only remembered when we are needed, and ignored when we ask for what truly matters.”
She believes creatives have gradually been reduced to tools of political convenience, celebrated during campaigns or national moments but sidelined when structural support is required. For Kasita, the stalled copyright law is the clearest example of this neglect.
“If government genuinely wanted to give musicians a strong copyright law, it wouldn’t take this long,” she added, noting that years of discussions have produced little tangible progress.
Kasita also weighed in on the role of Eddy Kenzo, one of Uganda’s most globally recognised artists, who has increasingly positioned himself as a representative of musicians’ interests.
While she suggested that Kenzo may have paid a personal price by stepping into leadership and politics, she stopped short of dismissing his efforts.
“It’s hard to say whether he knew he would end up with that much responsibility,” she said, expressing hope that his sacrifices might eventually translate into real gains for the industry.
