Outspoken singer Alien Skin has sparked fresh debate within Uganda’s music industry after issuing a blunt post-election message to fellow artists, urging them to refocus on their craft now that the political season has ended.
In a statement shared on his social platforms, Alien Skin argued that the end of elections and political rallies marks a turning point for musicians who, in his view, allowed politics to overshadow music.
“Now that elections and rallies are over, Ugandan musicians, it’s time to face reality,” he said. “While some of you were chasing politics and sympathy, it’s high time music speaks. There are no excuses now.”
The singer acknowledged that artists are free to engage in politics if they choose, but stressed that such choices come with consequences. According to Alien Skin, the political chapter has been closed for now, leaving musicians with a long stretch ahead where creativity and consistency will be the only measures of relevance.
“If you choose politics, that is your choice,” he added. “But the term is set and there is a long break from politics ahead. Let the music talk.”
His remarks have resonated across the entertainment industry, reigniting long-standing conversations about the intersection between music, politics, and public sympathy. In recent years, several Ugandan artists have openly aligned themselves with political movements, often drawing both praise and criticism from fans.
Alien Skin’s comments suggest a reset moment for the industry, one where charts, performances, and audience connection take precedence over political positioning. For some, his words serve as a challenge; for others, a reminder that longevity in music ultimately depends on output, not alliances.
As Uganda settles into a post-election period, the spotlight now returns fully to the studio, the stage, and the sound. Whether artists rise to the challenge or continue to blur the lines between art and politics remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the excuses, as Alien Skin puts it, are over.
