Fresh from his parliamentary victory, comedian turned politician Swengere has moved quickly to reassure fans that his trademark humour is not headed for early retirement.
Swengere, whose real name is Husein Muyonjo, was elected Member of Parliament for Jinja North constituency on the National Unity Platform ticket in last week’s elections, capping a career that has long balanced entertainment and public service.
For many, winning a parliamentary seat often signals the end of a former profession as the weight of national responsibility takes centre stage. But Swengere insists his journey will follow a different path.
“I’m not quitting comedy,” he said, laughing off suggestions that Parliament would swallow up his creative life. “I have done this before.”
The legislator pointed to his time as a councillor, during which he successfully combined leadership with comedy, consistently writing and performing skits that kept his audience engaged.
“If I managed to balance both roles then, I will be able to do the same in Parliament,” he said.
However, the decision to run for office was not an easy one. Swengere admitted that stepping into elective politics came with doubts, especially in a society where entertainers are often dismissed as unserious when they seek leadership positions.
“Deciding to join Parliament was challenging because a lot of people don’t take you seriously,” he said. “Some even asked me whether I would end up like Hilderman and other artists who joined Parliament and were later branded ineffective.”
Despite the skepticism, Swengere says his victory is proof that voters are increasingly willing to look beyond stereotypes, and that humour and leadership can coexist in public service.
