Media personality and events host MC Kats has opened up with raw honesty about his role in introducing singer Fille Mutoni to Uganda’s demanding music industry, admitting that the decision is one he now deeply regrets.
Speaking candidly, Kats reflected on Fille’s meteoric rise from church singer to one of the country’s biggest female stars, a journey he says came with a heavy and painful cost.
At the peak of her career, Kats revealed that he deliberately positioned Fille to outshine fellow artiste Irene Ntale, whom he viewed as her biggest competitor at the time. For a while, the strategy paid off. Fille dominated charts, landed premium bookings, and became one of the most sought-after performers in the country.
But behind the success, Kats says, the pressure was quietly taking its toll.
“She was overpowered,” he admitted. “This industry is not for everyone. Some people are not mentally or emotionally built to handle the pressure.”
According to Kats, the constant competition, expectations to continuously deliver hit songs, peer influence, and the unforgiving nature of the entertainment world pushed Fille toward drugs as a way of coping.
“In trying to survive, she found her own way of navigating through it,” he said. “Unfortunately, that way involved drugs.”
One incident, Kats says, still haunts him to this day. He had secured significant funding to shoot Where Have You Been At, a project that was initially intended to feature Radio & Weasel. On the scheduled day, however, Fille failed to show up after reportedly being under the influence.
Panicked and under pressure to account for the funds, Kats scrambled to salvage the situation. He rushed to producer Artin, had Dokta Brain write a new song, and worked with Jeff to confirm the project. But by the time the video shoot with Great Make Films came around, the money had already been spent.
“I had to sell my piece of land to fund that video,” Kats revealed.
Looking back, he says his greatest regret is not protecting Fille from the pressures of mainstream fame.
“I got her from Miracle Center,” he said. “I should have left her there. I should have let her sing Gospel music. To sing for God.”
Kats also noted that before joining the mainstream industry, Fille had never consumed alcohol, a detail he believes underscores how drastically her environment changed once fame arrived.
Today, his reflections stand as both a personal confession and a cautionary tale about the often unseen emotional and psychological cost of success in Uganda’s music industry.
