Leaders of the Uganda Music Promoters SACCO are under investigation over the alleged mismanagement of Shs1.5 billion meant to support the local entertainment industry, after failing to satisfactorily account for the funds.
The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), working jointly with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), has summoned several top promoters to assist with ongoing inquiries into how the money was allocated and spent.
The Shs1.5 billion was issued in January 2026 as a revolving fund, personally extended by President Museveni to strengthen music promotion businesses and stimulate growth in Uganda’s creative economy.
In a letter seen by sQoop, prominent event promoters including Mr Godfrey Mayanja, Mr Yasin Kaweesi, Mr Abbey Musinguzi and Mr Zaidi Kafeero were directed to report to SHACU offices on Monday where they were expected to present financial records, expenditure reports and explanations relating to the use of the funds.
Sources familiar with the matter say red flags were raised after the SACCO reportedly failed to provide clear accountability for the money months after it was disbursed, prompting anti-corruption agencies to intervene.
Officials from CID and SHACU stress that the investigation is aimed at establishing transparency and determining whether the funds were used strictly for their intended purpose. They caution, however, that any evidence of misappropriation could result in criminal charges against individuals found culpable.
Authorities have also called on stakeholders within the music and entertainment industry to fully cooperate with investigators, describing the probe as part of wider government efforts to tighten oversight of public and quasi-public funds, particularly in the fast-growing cultural and creative sectors.
