Kampala men, we need a new elective at Makerere: Nsibambi Studies 101 – Post-Investment Recovery. Not recklessly, of course because when you give a gift and the other party decides to admire it from a distance like a museum exhibit, you must also be emotionally prepared. After all, Yusuf Nsibambi recently reminded the nation that in Kampala, even transformers can develop feelings.
The former Mawokota South MP did not just lose an election , he experienced what economists would call a total market collapse with emotional inflation. After being defeated by NRM’s Susan Nakawuki, the veteran FDC politician announced retirement from elective politics, blaming Opposition infighting and NUP vote-splitting. Standard political script. Shortly after the polls, Buyaaya Village went dark.
Electricity vanished like campaign promises after swearing-in day. For the first time, UEDCL was innocent. Nsibambi reportedly disconnected a transformer he claimed he personally funded. Residents cried foul, calling it punishment for voting incorrectly. Nsibambi’s defence was simple and painfully Ugandan: It is my transformer. Imagine voting out your landlord and he takes the roof with him.
Social media had a feast, he was labeled petty, vindictive. Just when the dust was settling, Nsibambi marched to State House to meet President Museveni, citing national reconciliation. Critics saw reconciliation; others saw repositioning with presidential WiFi access. Allegations flew that some NUP MPs attended secretly but refused cameras , Uganda’s first political invisibility cloak. Makerere students resurfaced with wholesome memories: Nsibambi buying lunch for classes, gifting Qurans, printing notes, mentoring students. The same man now trending for transformer repossession once sponsored academic electricity. We were conflicted. Was this bitterness, strategy, or just the advanced syllabus of politics?
