Ugandan comedy received a fresh breath of life as Merryhearts Comedy staged their most ambitious and artistically curated show yet — Tumbeetu City Laugh: The City Must Laugh, drawing laughter, surprise, and admiration from hundreds who packed the iconic Theatre Labonita.
The evening was nothing short of a theatrical spectacle, blending smart, clean humour with artistic excellence. This marked Merryhearts’ second major outing at Labonita, following their September 7, 2024 debut, which stunned many by pulling a full house despite competition from seven major concerts across Kampala, including acts by Gravity Omutujju and Mikie Wine.
This year’s show wasn’t just another performance, it was a branded experience and a full-circle moment for a group that has built its name on discipline, creativity, and values-driven entertainment.
“We planned this show following the core principles of art,” said Ivan, one half of the comedy duo. “Think of an idea, develop the idea, rehearse the idea, and finally sell the funny idea — and that’s what people came to enjoy.”
In a surprise moment that warmed the audience’s hearts, over 50 children from Glorious Primary School graced the stage with a well-coordinated performance that seamlessly blended with the comedy routines. Their appearance reinforced Merryhearts’ identity as a family-friendly, inclusive, and intentional brand.
“Our audience expects the best because our values are clear. We don’t do vulgar. We’re proud to be trusted with children — not just in schools but also at family events and parties,” the team emphasized.
The stage setup itself was a visual treat — with striking props, vibrant lighting, and thoughtful design that elevated the entire event into an artistic production rather than just a string of jokes.
The night featured a star-studded lineup including MC Mariachi, Spice Diana, Maulana & Reign, Doreen Favour, and Bizoonto — all of whom added flair and variety to the comedy-rich evening. But at the heart of it all was Merryhearts Comedy, whose unique storytelling and theatrical roots anchored the show.
At the core of the group is the beloved duo of Tumbeetu Big and Tumbeetu Small, who brought on-stage magic through their perfect balance of character execution and content creation.
“Tumbeetu Big is amazing with characters. Tumbeetu Small is the brain behind the content. Together, we’re not just a group, we’re a creative force,” they said.
Armed with academic training from Makerere University’s Department of Drama and Film, and mentorship under Philip Luswata of Theatre Factory, the Merryhearts team treats comedy as more than just entertainment.
“Our industry is still virgin,” they boldly declared. “It’s waiting for fresh content creators to take over. Many legends have done their part but this is not their time. The curve is changing, and audiences want new, relatable, fresh content.”
That bold stance was evident in every act performed, every line delivered, and every audience reaction captured. It’s clear Merryhearts Comedy isn’t here to mimic — they’re here to lead.
Known for their school-based shows and high reputation among education institutions, the group continues to broaden its influence beyond traditional venues.
“Being comedians is just one part of who we are. We are creators, observers of society, and most importantly, we are artists with a purpose,” the group affirmed.
As Tumbeetu City Laugh wrapped up to roaring applause, one thing was certain: Uganda’s comedy landscape is evolving — and Merryhearts Comedy is at the forefront, proving that you don’t need vulgarity or shortcuts to fill a theatre and leave an audience in stitches.
