At the genesis of this Mama D saga, I had a small chat with my editor. We were discussing, on a scale of one to mufere, how genuine this woman was? Now, me as me, I did not know Mama D like that, so I chose silence. But my editor, as a seasoned veteran from the Facebook trenches, confidently said, Mama D has a long and interesting history from that platform.
I should have listened. If you do not know who Mama D is, this is your cue to either consult your neighbourhood gossip or Google quickly, then come back and be offended with the rest of us. The short version? Mama D showed up at a video library (of all places) with swollen face, feet, and fingers. A concerned good Samaritan noticed, urged her to get checked, and boom pre-eclampsia. Life-threatening.
She rushed to TMR-Naalya, her trusted hospital for over 10 years (even though TMR has existed for only nine), and survived. Ugandans, in true UBUNTU spirit, fundraised over Shs6m to save her and her twins. Popular tweep Gabriel Buule and others sent money. Receipts exist. Screenshots exist. But when it came time to say “Thank You,” Mama D skipped all that and instead released an Oscar-worthy speech thanking… wait for it, the UPDF, not the Twitter aunties who sent their ka last 50K. Not Buule who called five times to cross-check every transfer.
Not the people who postponed lunch to save her life. No, she thanked the army. Why? Because her mother ran away from Nabisunsa in 1982, joined the bush war, and allegedly became Museveni’s most trusted freedom fighter.
And somehow, in 2025, this justifies UPDF’s love donation. Meanwhile, we fellow civilians who contributed actual money are left holding our MTN Mobile Money confirmation messages like, so what are we? Clowns? Let me be clear; we are glad the babies are alive. But thanking UPDF while ignoring the people who actually paid the bills? That is not gratitude.
That is PR with a side of betrayal. Meanwhile…last update by time of filing this, there was a quote: “There were no babies in those blankets. They were just blankets because I needed to make an announcement that the babies are here.” SMH!
