Events promoter Miriam Mutakubwa, popularly known as Biggie, has been remanded to Luzira Prison after failing to pay a debt amounting to Shs70,058,000 owed to a one Mr David Tumusiime Amooti.
Mutakubwa, who rose to prominence on Kampala’s entertainment scene for organizing high-profile shows, was reportedly arrested yesterday in downtown Kampala by court bailiffs and taken to court, where she was unable to settle the outstanding amount.
“We have arrested Miriam Mutakubwa over a loan of Shs70,058,000 from Mr. David Tumusiime Amooti,” said court bailiff Sarah Komugisha. “We found her downtown and brought her to court. When we arrived, she did not have the money, and the court decided to send her to Luzira.”
Komugisha added that Mutakubwa will spend six months in Luzira Prison unless she clears the debt in full.
This is not the first time the events promoter has found herself in controversy. Earlier this year, Mutakubwa made headlines when legendary Kadongokamu artist Lord Fred Sebatta accused her of failing to pay him a Shs13 million balance from a concert she organized.
Mutakubwa gained recognition in the events industry for promoting several major shows, including Jose Chameleone’s “Gwanga Mujje” concert, Lord Fred Sebatta’s 42 Years in Music celebration, and later, her own Islamic-themed brunch series in Kampala.
Her detention marks another low point in what had once been a promising rise in Uganda’s vibrant events promotion scene.
