Lately, Dr Hillary Okello has been getting the attention he deserves. Something that every creative longs for. Every stage that he has stepped on this year, he has been leaving a mark to the extent that someone regarded him as Uganda’s Chris Rock. Last Friday was not any different as Okello delivered the right prescription to the audience during his Uganda Must Laugh grand Finale at Theatre Labonita. With a full house, the 2017 Next Top Comedian came ready for the showdown.
For close to two hours he was on stage, he cracked people’s ribs with every joke he made. His punchlines were rooted in Uganda’s everyday experiences, including transportation, families and his medical background. His jokes were organised, engaging and relatable. For example the joke he made about people’s experiences on boda bodas. “The way you bargain determines the treatment you receive from boda guys. If they tell you a figure and you do not bargain, they will treat you like a king, they will wipe where you are going to sit, they will ride at the speed of your convenience, they will even take a longer distance but dare give them half or below what they asked for. That is the day you will regret taking a ride”.
He further explained why there will never be sanity between people on boda bodas and those in cars, saying if anyone is in a hurry for a meeting or something of the sort, they will instruct the boda riders to commit all crimes on the road but if the same person is in a car, he will be the same person to caution the actions made by a boda rider, forgetting his experience on a boda earlier. True, some of the jokes were not fresh but his delivery made even those who were familiar with them crack a rib like the joke of how he was teamed up with Opio in a chemistry exam that forced them to use urine and be praised for it not until the supervisor smelt the test tube.
Before he stepped on stage, the audience was entertained by Jacques Rwothomio and Suuna Lawrence among others. The trained medic who swapped careers for comedy will be heading for his first world tour early next year that will see him perform in Oslo, London, Berlin before heading to North America and Australia among others in what he terms as taking Uganda comedy to the world. Before that, he will be in South Africa this month.
