A brief moment during Micki Wine’s concert at Serena Hotel over the weekend has stirred public debate after singer OS Suuna’s attempted handshake with National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi was visibly ignored.
OS Suuna, who was among the performers of the night, walked to Bobi Wine’s table mid-performance and stretched out his hand in a gesture that many assumed would symbolise respect or reconciliation. Bobi Wine did not respond, prompting a storm of reactions on social media, with opinions split on whether the politician was right or wrong to refuse the gesture.
Among those who defended Kyagulanyi’s decision was television personality Andrew Kyamagero, who took to his social media pages to weigh in on the incident. According to Kyamagero, leadership sometimes requires avoiding situations that may appear harmless to the public eye but carry deeper implications.
Kyamagero wrote that not every handshake is an act of peace and that leaders are often expected to navigate spaces filled with people who “smile in public while spitting venom in private.” He argued that true leadership is not about greeting everyone but about recognising and avoiding traps.
He noted that Kyagulanyi, like many leaders before him, carries memories of betrayal and must exercise caution. Kyamagero compared the moment to historical examples, stating that even global figures like Mandela, Nyerere, Nkrumah, and Lumumba avoided certain interactions for their own safety and integrity.
He concluded by urging critics to reflect on whether leadership is the art of pleasing everyone or the discipline of knowing who to keep at a distance.
The incident has since sparked conversations about political tensions within the entertainment industry, public expectations of leaders, and the boundaries between courtesy and caution in high-profile settings.
Those who are lamenting that @HEBobiwine did not shake hands with Ssuna must be reminded of a timeless truth: Leadership is not measured by how many hands you touch, but by how many traps you refuse to fall into.
