Nina Kankunda, popularly known as Nina Roz, is facing public criticism and internal discomfort within the National Unity Platform (NUP) after openly endorsing a rival candidate over her own party’s flag bearer. The singer, who is NUP’s official flag bearer for the Sembabule Woman MP seat in the 2026 general elections, made comments that many believe undermine party cohesion.
In an interview that surfaced on Sunday night, the Billboard Kipande singer urged Kampala voters to rally behind Moses Muhangi for the Kampala MP seat. Muhangi is contesting against Lewis Lubongoya, the official NUP candidate for the same position.
“I would like to ask Kampala people to always see Muhangi. He has been my person, so on my behalf and the friendship we have, I beg you to always consider him because Kampala deserves someone hardworking and standing,” Nina Roz said.
The remarks triggered an immediate wave of online criticism. Many social media users accused her of disregarding party structures and betraying the expectations that come with being a flag bearer, while others questioned her understanding of party discipline. Some dismissed her comments as misguided loyalty to a personal friend, while others argued she was jeopardizing her own political credibility at a crucial moment.
As one of the few artistes seeking high political office under NUP, Nina Roz’s endorsement has reignited debate about the role of entertainers in politics, the boundaries of personal allegiance, and the importance of party unity ahead of the 2026 elections.
