Kalagala Falls, the new home of Nyege Nyege, is far — very far. Tucked about 30 kilometres from Jinja, the place is beautiful, wild, untouched… and has absolutely no accommodation options. None. If you’re attending, you’re pitching a tent. Full stop.

And pitch they did.

This year, Nyege has transformed the riverbank into a sprawling tent city. At least 90 percent of festival-goers are camping, turning the entire landscape into a colourful forest of nylon and canvas. There are so many tents that tomorrow morning might just bring back memories of the infamous 2022 mass tent–shaking ritual. If you know, you know.

Vendors, of course, understood the assignment. They came ready — and they’re smiling to the bank. If you brought your own tent, the cheapest patch of ground you can rent is 120k, and that’s for a few square metres of dirt. A tiny 3×6 tent goes for 240k, while a double tent is 340k. Camping, it appears, is the newest luxury.

But here’s the real plot twist.

Despite a surprisingly lacklustre marketing push — perhaps the most forgettable in Nyege’s ten-year history — the crowds have still poured in. The attendance looks just like the classic Nyege throngs we’ve come to expect: thousands of bodies, beats, lights, dancers, wanderers, and free spirits.

Somehow, against all odds, Nyege Nyege at ten has pulled off another miracle. Maybe it’s the magic of the falls. Maybe it’s the spirit of Nyege. Or maybe Ugandans just refuse to miss a party — even if it means sleeping in the bush.
