Grammy Award winning artist Burna Boy has stirred fresh debate after admitting in a recent interview that he once felt disconnected from his Nigerian identity.
“I was in a place where I forgot I wanted to forget I was Nigerian. To be honest, I wasn’t proud to be Nigerian. It wasn’t a proud thing to be, and that’s the truth. Being in the UK, it wasn’t the proudest thing to be. I didn’t care about anything Nigerian,” he said.

His confession comes at a time when the global star is under mounting criticism in the United States, where he is currently experiencing low ticket sales and a series of cancelled shows. The backlash intensified after footage went viral showing him ejecting a fan who had fallen asleep during a performance, an incident that many described as humiliating and uncalled for.
The controversy follows earlier episodes in which Burna Boy was filmed kicking a fan who approached the stage and ordering another to leave his concert. These moments have been widely criticised as aggressive behaviour and have contributed to growing concerns about his treatment of supporters.
During a recent livestream, the 34 year old Afrobeats singer addressed the negative reactions directly. He dismissed critics and stated that he is only interested in fans who can afford to attend his shows. “Did I tell you all to be my fans? I am only looking for fans who have money,” he said.
His remarks have sparked heated debate, with many questioning whether Burna Boy is becoming increasingly detached from the audience that helped propel his career. Others argue that his candid reflections about identity and self perception are being taken out of context.
Amid the ongoing criticism, Burna Boy has cancelled another stop on his No Sign of Weakness tour in the United States. His Minneapolis show, which was scheduled for Friday November 28 2025 at The Armory, was officially cancelled according to the Ticketmaster listing on Thursday November 27 2025. Tour organisers have not offered a detailed explanation, though the decision comes at a time when the artist is facing significant public relations pressure.
Whether viewed as honest self reflection or further evidence of arrogance, Burna Boy’s recent statements and actions have kept him firmly at the centre of global conversation.
