The Electoral Commission (EC) has cancelled the nomination of singer and Kyengera Town Council Mayor Mathias Walukaga as the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for Busiro East citing expired academic credentials.
EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama ruled that Walukaga’s Mature Age Certificate from Islamic University in Uganda had expired by the time he was nominated on October 23, 2025, and therefore did not meet the minimum academic requirement for a Member of Parliament.
The decision followed a petition challenging his eligibility. Walukaga’s lawyers argued the certificate was still valid because it was used for university admission, but the Commission maintained the two-year validity period had lapsed.
With Walukaga now out of the race, incumbent Medard Ssegona, who is running as an Independent, faces a changed political landscape as campaigns intensify ahead of the 2026 elections.
