Kampala never runs short of Sunday hangouts, but Barbeque, Beats & Belly Laughs continues to hit the perfect balance of flavour, music, and easy-going fun. Back with renewed energy and now curated by The Singleton, the latest edition transformed a parking lot along Acacia Avenue into a swanky blue outdoor lounge where smooth whisky, juicy meat, and great company blended seamlessly.
Hosted by corporate executive-turned-grill-enthusiast Tony Otoa, the evening carried the charm of a backyard gathering, only bigger and tastier. Otoa, now a self-taught roasting maestro and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at the Uganda National Oil Company, commanded the grill with confidence, dishing out flame-kissed cuts of meat that kept plates full and spirits high. His philosophy is simple: feed people well and feed them until they surrender. On this Sunday, he certainly delivered.
Many in the audience seemed to underestimate just how serious Otoa takes that mission. The meat kept coming, and one by one some guests started tapping out. The secret to survival, however, was right in front of them: pairing each bite with The Singleton. With a neat pour or cocktail in hand, suddenly a second or third serving of tender pork didn’t seem like a stretch after all.
Otoa’s Comrade Grills team worked nonstop, serving chicken, goat’s meat and pork the chicken reigning as the clear crowd-favorite. Waiters encouraged guests not to leave any meat clinging to bones, always nearby to ask, “More?”
The Singleton added a premium touch, carefully curating the sipping experience with a cocktail bar that welcomed guests into the evening. The whisky’s smooth, layered profile seamlessly complemented every roast, making each pairing feel like a tiny culinary discovery.
What truly set Otoa’s roast apart was the texture perfectly juicy and impossibly tender. Conversations across tables turned into speculation.
“Do you think this was boiled first? It’s too soft to be just a roast,” one guest wondered.
As the sun dipped and the whisky glow grew warmer, Sese Nation took charge of the rhythm. Their sets guided guests from mellow sundowner vibes into full-throttle dancing, ensuring the music matched the mood at every turn. Laughter, banter and spontaneous jokes kept the atmosphere light, intimate, and unmistakably Kampala.
In the end, Barbeque, Beats & Belly Laughs delivered exactly what it promised: a sensory trifecta of taste, rhythm and connection. With The Singleton elevating the experience, the event returned richer, smoother, and more immersive than ever.
For a city that loves meat, music, and meeting up “just because,” Sunday night in Kololo proved that the simplest pleasures done with style are always the most satisfying.
