Ugandan singer Wycliffe Tugume, popularly known as Ykee Benda, has distanced himself from political propaganda circulating online that falsely attributes to him remarks supporting the torture and brutalisation of opposition politicians.
In an official statement released by his management, the singer’s team dismissed the claims as false and misleading, saying neither Ykee Benda nor anyone associated with him made such statements.
“Good morning, there has been a post from two blogging platforms stating things that have not come from our artist anywhere, nor from anyone on his team,” the statement read.
The management apologised to the public for any discomfort caused by the posts and confirmed that they are engaging the platforms involved to establish how the misinformation was published.
“As management, we are following up to get to the bottom of this. It goes without saying that such a statement cannot possibly come from Ykee Benda, and we apologise for any discomfort caused by this propaganda,” the statement added.
Ykee Benda also questioned why certain online media outlets would attribute political views to him that he never expressed, stressing that he has not issued any comments endorsing violence or human rights abuses.
The statement concluded with a defiant tone, suggesting the artist was being deliberately targeted.
“We live in a world of darkness, and people are always looking for a way to put another down. But Ykee Benda isn’t going anywhere. No weapon formed against him shall prosper,” the management said. The clarification comes amid heightened online scrutiny of public figures and the rapid spread of unverified political content across social media platforms.
