For years, Bangar Boi has been the quiet force behind some of Swangz Avenue’s most polished and commercially successful hits. Yet despite his standing as one of Uganda’s most sought-after producers, his name is rarely credited on projects outside the celebrated label, a pattern that has fueled speculation about exclusivity and favouritism.
Speaking during an appearance on The Deep Talk, the producer finally addressed the long-running whispers, offering clarity on why his work remains largely confined to Swangz Avenue.
“It’s not that I ignore other artists,” Bangar Boi explained. “My contract with Swangz doesn’t permit me to do work beyond their studio.”
According to him, the agreement allows him to collaborate with external artists only under one condition: they must record their music from Swangz Avenue’s studios.
While the clause appears straightforward, Bangar Boi admits it has created an unexpected barrier. Many artists, he says, are reluctant to step into the Swangz space due to lingering fears and misconceptions.
“The contract states that I can work with others as long as they come to Swangz,” he said. “But musicians fear that place. They feel insecure, thinking their song might be stolen or their idea handed to another Swangz artist. But it’s not like that.”
Bangar Boi insists such concerns are unfounded, emphasizing that professionalism and respect for creative ownership are core principles within the label. However, he acknowledges that perception often outweighs reality, and that mistrust has kept several potential collaborations from materializing.
Despite these limitations, the producer maintains that his creativity has not been stifled. Though legally tied to Swangz Avenue, he says he continues to exchange ideas, consult, and collaborate informally with fellow producers, allowing him to grow artistically without crossing contractual boundaries.
In an industry where access often defines opportunity, Bangar Boi’s revelation offers a rare glimpse into the contractual realities that quietly shape Uganda’s soundscape, and the unseen lines that even top producers must navigate.
