The 2026 general elections delivered disappointing results for two well-known figures in Uganda’s music industry, as singer Nina Roz and rapper Dr Hilderman both lost their parliamentary races.
In Sembabule District, singer Nina Kankunda, popularly known as Nina Roz, fell short in her bid for the Woman Member of Parliament seat, finishing third in a tightly contested race. The musician was up against Florence Nambazira (NRM), Mary Begumisa (Independent), Angella Kigonya (DP) and Ester Kinkuhire (Independent).
Nina Roz’s campaign attracted attention both within and beyond Sembabule, driven by her celebrity status and strong youth appeal. Her entry into politics had been framed as a bold transition from the stage to public service, tapping into a growing trend of entertainers seeking political office. However, the results underscored the reality that popularity in music does not always translate into votes, especially in constituencies where grassroots mobilisation and long-standing political networks remain decisive.
In Mawokota North, another familiar face from Uganda’s music scene also tasted defeat. Hillary Kiyaga, better known as Dr Hilderman, lost the parliamentary seat to veteran politician Amelia Kyambadde. Dr Hilderman, who has previously served as an opposition MP, mounted a spirited campaign but was unable to reclaim the constituency in an election marked by intense competition and high voter turnout.
The losses have sparked conversation across social media and in entertainment circles about the growing intersection of celebrity culture and politics. While musicians often command large followings and influence public discourse, the 2026 elections once again highlighted that voters ultimately weigh experience, local presence and political organisation alongside star power.
