The elections may be over, but the political aftershocks continue to ripple through Uganda’s public sphere, this time playing out on Twitter, where musicians Dax Vibez and Ykee Benda found themselves on opposite sides of a heated exchange.
The online spat was sparked after Dax Vibez posted a tweet describing Uganda as a dictatorship “where the gun is the master and citizens the slaves.” He ended his post by declaring, “We reject this sham called an election.”
Ykee Benda did not let the remarks slide. In a pointed response, he questioned how Dax Vibez intended to reject the election. “By tweeting about it in your sitting room?” he asked, before launching into a broader defence of the status quo.
Ykee Benda argued that leading a country as diverse and populous as Uganda is no simple task. “Leading people of over 60 different ethnicities and a population of over 50 million is not child’s play,” he wrote, adding that national leadership involves serious, real-life decisions about the future of a young nation.
According to the singer, power cannot simply be “handed to anyone fwaa” on the basis of popularity or fame, but should rest with someone who understands the weight of leading millions of citizens.
While acknowledging that government still has room for improvement, Ykee Benda maintained that President Yoweri Museveni whom he referred to as “Muzei Sevo” remains, in his view, “by a mile the best option for this country,” insisting that more Ugandans are gradually coming to accept this reality.
In a conciliatory note, Ykee Benda also praised National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, for his courage. He described Kyagulanyi’s presidential bid as commendable, noting that it takes “a very strong character to dare and dream” of vying for the country’s top office, and said he holds him in high regard.
Still, Ykee Benda concluded by urging the nation to move forward. With the election decided, he called on Ugandans to return to their daily work and focus on building the country.
