Renowned songwriter and singer Dokta Brain, born Geoffrey Nkwanga, has sparked conversation after candidly revealing that he does not envision himself remaining a performing artiste for the rest of his life, despite being responsible for some of Uganda’s biggest chart-topping hits.
Speaking openly about his relationship with music, Dokta Brain described the act of performing as both rewarding and exhausting, likening it to “slavery” due to the physical and mental demands that come with staying on stage.
“At one point, I may stop singing because I see it as slavery,” he said. “You do it for some time, then you rest. If you master the game, you can take big steps. And if it becomes beneficial to the extent that you can’t quit, then at least learn from it and become the one offering the end service.”
With over a decade in the industry, Dokta Brain has played a key role in shaping Uganda’s contemporary sound, writing hit songs for top female artistes including Winnie Nwagi, Sheebah and Spice Diana. Yet despite his success as a performer, he believes music is a phase, not a lifetime sentence.
“I cannot die on stage personally,” he admitted. “But I will never abandon the pen. I keep writing even when I don’t want to.”
For Dokta Brain, songwriting is instinctive, almost effortless, driven by passion rather than pressure. Performing, however, tells a different story.
“Writing is effortless for me,” he said. “If I had decided to just write music and not sing, I would be the fattest person in the room,” he joked. “Singing stresses me. It even makes me lose weight.”
His remarks have resonated with many within the industry, opening up a broader conversation about longevity, burnout, and the unseen pressures artists face beyond the spotlight. For Dokta Brain, the future is clear: even if the stage lights dim, the pen will never stop moving.
