Churchill James Ssentamu, the Makerere University Guild President and son of Chairman Nyanzi, has suffered a decisive defeat in the race for Central Region Youth Representative to Parliament.
Ssentamu, who is also a nephew to National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was trounced in results officially declared by the Electoral Commission on January 28, 2026. According to the final tally, Ssentamu secured only 34 votes, finishing far behind Begira Samuel of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who emerged winner with a commanding 1,001 votes.
A total of 1,105 ballot papers were counted during the exercise, of which 1,100 were valid. Five ballot papers were rejected, while two were spoiled. The wide margin in the results highlighted the NRM’s continued dominance in elections for special interest group representatives, particularly at the regional level.
Other candidates in the race included Isaac Nazimuura of the BALL party, who garnered 46 votes, Edward Mulabako of the National Unity Platform, who received 12 votes, and Andrew Bbaale of the Democratic Party (DP), who trailed with just two votes. Ssentamu’s loss marks a significant setback in his first major national political contest, despite his high profile within student leadership and opposition politics.
