The heyday of Uganda’s music industry was defined by identity. It was not just about sound, but about a shared listening culture shaped by delectable guitar riffs, steady drums, and locally crafted lyrics that felt unmistakably Ugandan. As the industry expanded and opened itself to broader influences, that sense of uniqueness gradually thinned, leaving behind a scene that, while more diverse, often struggles with direction.
Slade Musix, born Moses Mukiibi, believes Ugandan music can still rewind its story by deliberately forging an identity capable of competing on the global stage. Signed to Black Market Records, the singer-songwriter is drawing inspiration from the diverse linguistic tapestry of East Africa as he pushes to create music that aligns with international standards without losing its roots.
His debut single Crush, produced by Octave, captures the essence of his musical journey. The song showcases smooth vocals layered over infectious melodies, exploring themes of love, ambition, and resilience. It is a confident introduction to an artist intent on bridging local authenticity with global appeal. Other tracks including My Dream, Crazy, and Minakonda further hint at his endgame, an international audience reached through thoughtful sound and language choices.
At the heart of Slade’s strategy is multilingualism. He acknowledges that Uganda’s music scene is rich in Luganda-infused tracks, a strength rather than a weakness. However, in an era driven by streaming and global discovery, music must be deliberately crafted for cross-border resonance. He points to Nigeria’s Afrobeats explosion, which thrives on a fluid blend of English, Pidgin, and indigenous languages, as a model for breaking through international markets.
“I am weaving English into my music for universal appeal, Luganda for cultural authenticity, and Swahili to bridge East African markets,” he explains.
Recorded over Afro-pop rhythms and anchored by profound lyrics, Slade’s music offers a compelling mix of energy and poetic flair. It signals not just a personal artistic journey, but a broader possibility for Ugandan music to reclaim its identity while confidently stepping onto the world stage.
